| BAFE Clamps Down on Competence

Following the introduction of the Fire Safety Order, the new legislation which applies to businesses in England and Wales, BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) has published a competence requirements guideline for companies undertaking work associated with fire detection and alarm systems.
The list of requirements, produced in conjunction with the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA), is an attempt to clarify what is necessary for a company to be deemed competent. The list includes:
- When a fire detection and alarm system is required, fire risk assessments should be undertaken, resulting in a specification of requirements for system supplying organisations
- Companies involved with design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection alarm systems should provide proof of their competence
- A Certification from a Third Party Certification Scheme, where companies will have met the Scheme Requirements often drawn up on behalf of BAFE and regularly audited, is a good demonstration of competence.
- The CFOA support the benefits of Third Party Certification Schemes and are sponsoring a Memorandum of Understanding between parties.
- The need to reduce false alarms involving fire detection and alarm systems is ever increasing. The CFOA Remote Monitored Fire Alarm System (RMFAS) Policy requires systems to be maintained by a Third Party Certified Company.
- Power supplies for a fire detection and alarm system are normally supplied by the building’s mains electricity supply - Should the electrical supply fail, rechargeable batteries are provided to ensure the system remains operational until the mains is restored. The electrical safety of the system should also be checked by a competent organisation
| Sunfish Join FIA
Sunfish have been unanimously approved to be accepted as members of the Fire Industry Association. The FIA was formed earlier this year following the merger of the BFPSA (British Fire Protection Equipment Association) and FETA (Fire Extinguisher Trade Association).
Entry into the FIA comes hot on the heals of Sunfish's success earlier this year in gaining accreditation to the BAFE SP203 Scheme for the design, installation, commissioning and handover, maintenance and verification of fire detection and alarm systems. Sunfish are also accredited to BS EN ISO 9001:2000.
